Nieder Neuendorfer See

The bicycle path runs parallel to the Nieder Neuendorfer See on the former East side where there are little sandy coves for bathing and jetties for whiling away the hours watching the long barges, motor and sailboats pass by. Close by is one of the few remaining watchtowers that is maintained as a little museum and is a chilling reminder of the claustrophobic atmosphere in which the border guards were cooped up for hours watching for escapees whom they had orders to shoot and kill, if necessary. From 1961 to 1990 only barges carrying goods to Poland or within the GDR could pass through. Transit to West Germany was forbidden.
