Many of the large villas, some of great historic interest, in the Karl-Marx-Straße, backing on to the Griebnitzsee, have changed hands several times in the past hundred years. It is difficult to say how many of them belonged to Jewish families before the Nazis came to power. Certainly a good many have, since the Wall came down, fallen victim to property speculation and have been restored in such a way that the houses now stand lifeless in their over-trimmed gardens. In addition to this, the desire of new owners to have their properties extend to the lakeside, which has meant literally dumping tons of earth onto the bike path and setting up fences, has enraged members of the community and caused bitter strife. It is to be hoped that the local government will succeed in their attempts to have the bike path freed again.
