Invalidenfriedhof

One of the oldest cemeteries in Berlin, foremost burial ground of high-ranking military personnel, which was divided by the Wall. By 1967 at least a third of the cemetery had been flattened. Graves and tombs had to be moved or completely destroyed to maintain the line of fire, for watch towers and troop barracks to be built. After German reunification in 1990 it was placed under a monument protection scheme. There is an unmarked mass grave for Berliners killed in Allied air raids.
